Reto Nickler’s way to become a stage director was by being an assistant at Stadttheater Bern, Theater Hagen and the Wiener Staatsoper. As director his debut was the “Daughter of the Regiment” at Theater Hagen.


More than 80 productions followed such as . Mussorgskis Boris Godunow in Bologna, Die Blinden of Beat Furrer at the Wiener Staatsoper, Henzes operas „The English cat“and „Pollicino“ in Bern und Zürich, Rossinis „Guillaume Tell“ in Geneva, Mozarts “Magic Flute” in Santa Fé, Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” in Seattle, d’Alberts „Tiefland“ in Luzern und „Salome“ and „La Wally“ in Klagenfurt, „ Don Carlo“ at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, “Iphigénie en Aulide“ at the Staatstheater Nürnberg,”The cunning little wixen” at Staatstheater Saarbrücken and „Rigoletto“ in Bern und Lübeck etc.

At the Zurich Opera Reto Nickler directed Zimmermanns „Die Weisse Rose“, Janaceks „Jenufa“ und Poulencs „Dialogues des Carmélites“. Reto Nicklers production of Heinz Holligers „Schneewittchen“ was elected world premiere of the year by the magazine Opernwelt.


Other successes were Schoecks „Penthesilea“ at the Lucerne Music Festival, „Guglielmo Tell“ in der Arena von Avenches, „La Bohème“ at the Finnish National Opera Helsinki, as well as Glanerts „Scherz, Satire, Ironie und tiefere Bedeutung“ at Prinzregententheater Munich and the very well received production of

Schönbergs „Moses und Aron“ at the Wiener Staatsoper.


Reto Nicklers work always had a special focus on contemporary music: The world premieres of „Schneewittchen“ (Heinz Holliger), „die Blinden“(Beat Furrer) „Stichtag“ (DanielFueter) as well as the operas „Göttliche Kirmes“(Nörgaard), „Elegy for young lovers“ (Henze) und „The Tempest“ (Adès) were internationally followed and well received.


For Swiss Television SFDRS Reto Nickler directed the film „perDu“ following his own script.


At the UEFA European Soccer Championship 2008 Switzerland/Austria Reto Nickler was responsible for different TV-events such as the Final Draw.

  • Johanna auf dem Scheiterhaufen (Honegger), mit de Billy, Wokalek, Quasthoff), Albertinum Dresden
  • Don Giovanni (Mozart), Theater Baden bei Wien

 


Reto Nickler has been
professor for acting and directing at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Wien since 1999´with the productions of “Albert Herring”, “Cosi fan tutte”, “Juliette”(Martinu), “Xerxes”, “La Calisto”, “La Bohème” etc
